DDOS - or how to annoy people anywhere in the world

| | Comments (0)

I've been around on the Internet since the early days of BBS's and school modem link-ups using BBC Micro's way back when in the dark ages of computing.

So I've seen a heck of a lot of development on how the web is used and abused...

Which gets me onto this mini rant - since this site is one of my first personal blogs about the web, internet design and whatever else takes my fancy (even though I've been designing them for other people for many a year), I wasn't too happy when I found I couldn't access the site to carry on with it's design; the general moving stuff around in the templates, getting organised and generally moving in.

Why?

Because my poor host company had the misfortune of being slammed with a massive DDoS attack, so there went my evening's design.

So here's my big question - why?

What makes someone go to all the effort of setting up quite an extensive network of computers, programs and connections to the internet just to switch off someone else's sites?
How does it make them feel?
Do they feel so impotent that their only method of gratification is to cause massive damage to the infrastructure of the internet?
Why can't some of these so-called-clever-clogs who can put all this time and effort into mayhem use their talents for actually helping people?
Y'know, maybe designing a decent compression algorithm that will enable people in Third World countries to surf the net with second hand machines but still enjoy it as it is - silly things that are a benefit to the world...
